The 4.5-liter Toyota 1VD-FTV engine has been produced at the plant of the Japanese concern since 2007 and is installed on the Land Cruiser 200 SUV, as well as the similar Lexus LX 450d. In addition to the bi-turbo diesel version, there is a modification with one turbine for the Land Cruiser 70.
The 1VD-FTV engine is Toyota’s first V8 diesel engine. It replaced the old and proven inline 6-cylinder 1HD-FTE. To comply with Euro 5 regulations, the engine is equipped with a water-cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system with a catalytic converter and a diesel particulate filter.
There is no need to adjust the valves here – there are hydraulic lifters. The 1VD-FTV engine is quite reliable due to its volume, but it is capricious in maintenance.
The unit has a cast-iron block with a closed cooling jacket and a 90° camber angle, aluminum DOHC heads with hydraulic compensators, a Common Rail Denso fuel system and a combined timing drive consisting of a pair of chains and a set of several gears. There is a version with a single turbine Garrett GTA2359V and bi-turbo with two IHI VB36 and VB37.
In 2012, an updated version of such a diesel engine appeared, which has a large number of differences, but the main thing is the presence of a particulate filter and a more modern fuel system with piezo injectors instead of electromagnetic ones earlier.
